Sheep Dip Malt Whisky NZD $94.00
The name came about because British farmers have long referred to whisky as Sheep Dip. There was a time when farmers distilled their own “home-made” whisky and in order to avoid paying taxes to the revenue man hid the whisky in barrels marked “Sheep Dip”. Farmers' merchants continued this tradition by entering cases of whisky as “Sheep dip” on farmers' bills and so “pulling the wool” over the farmers wives eyes. Rich, golden copper highlights in colour. Delicate and refined. Soft sensual floral notes arise in perfect harmony supported by an attractive array of complex fruit flavours. Melon, pear and orange with a hint of almonds conclude this profusion of charming nuances. Finesse and elegance gives way to a majestic assertion of pure malty flavours drawn from the four distilling regions of Scotland. Following a dramatic packaging makeover of its ‘standard’ blend, Whyte & Mackay has introduced a new aged blended expression, namely The Thirteen. This replaces the existing 12-year-old blend, and according to its creator, Master Blender Richard Paterson, “Thirteen may be seen as an unlucky number, but it’s very lucky for our consumers. The extra year that the malt whiskies in this blend have spent maturing in Sherry casks before being married with the grains gives it an extra mellowness and smoothness.” On the nose The Thirteen is more muscular than the ‘standard’ blend, with stewed fruit and Sherry notes. On the palate it is bigger bodied, richer and more Sherried in character. It is pleasingly complex, with spices and nuts and a medium length fruitcake finish. -

Penfolds Bluestone Grand Tawny Port NZD $37.50
The Penfolds Tawnies are made in Solera Systems (stacked blending systems) at Penfolds’ Kalimna Tawny Cellars. These wines are all aged in 300-litre hogsheads (oak barrels) that are at least twenty years old when they reach the Tawny Cellars, having been used for other Penfolds wines up until that point. The maturation process deliberately takes place under corrugated iron. At the height of summer the temperature on the top stack can reach 55 degrees; while in winter, the temperature can fall below 8 degrees. These cyclic swings in temperature are vital to the maturation process, as evaporation, concentration and controlled oxidation are all a part of the complex nature of the aromas and flavours. The combination of extended barrel maturation and the Penfolds tradition of excellence ensure Bluestone Rare Tawny has exceptional fruit richness, mellow aged complexity and great length of flavour. -
The Fix Shiraz 2010 NZD $15.99
The Fix Shiraz is made by Ben Jeanneret (of Jeanneret Wines) who is not only an extremely capable winemaker, but also has claims to being the youngest winery owner in the Clare Valley. ‘The Fix’ Shiraz is a wine borne from opportunity rather than design. Deep into the 2008 vintage, Ben came across a small parcel of McLaren Vale Shiraz that found itself homeless. After some quick negotiations, the fruit was transported to the Clare Valley where this wine was produced. This wine has aromas of sweet plum and blackberry with a chocolate background. The palate offers flavours of dark chocolate, subtle liquorice with and a touch of savouriness supported by some soft tannins. It is all wrapped up with a deft touch of American oak. This is a sensational value red wine which at this price is difficult to fault. -
Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2010 NZD $45.00
A warm, low-yielding vintage has produced a Pinot Noir displaying ripeness concentration and balance; dark fruits of the forest dominate the aroma and these are underpinned by lifted florals and black cherry, balanced with sweet aromatic spice notes. The wine has a ripe concentrated front palate, which displays these same characters in abundance. The mid palate is fleshy and well textured, and the wine finishes with a combination of ripe, fine-grained tannin, fruit and acidity. Cellaring Potential: Mt Difficulty Estate Pinot Noir will improve for 7-10 years given optimal vintage and cellaring conditions. Vintage 2010: Excellent concentration, with the hallmarks of a warmer season – concentrated ripe dark fruit mingled with a touch of red fruit and a splash of savoury spice! A nicely odd-ball vintage with warm conditions being over-ruled by ongoing winds and rapidly changing weather systems. Low initial bunch numbers coupled with the climatic variability led to yields being down by about 20% on average. A fantastic autumn helped bring the grapes through their last phase of ripening beautifully. Harvest was the latest we have ever experienced with first fruit not being picked till the 8th April. The blocks which are typically early were late, whilst our later blocks were harvested about their normal timeframe, leading to a very compacted busy vintage. -
