Perfect growing conditions in the valley produced this multi-award winning Pinot Gris. Aroma and Taste A very fruit driven style, with lovely ripe pear and peach flavours. Some subtle quince and spice notes add to the complexity. Some residual sugar (7g) results in a medium-full palate with great texture and a touch of sweetness. They were separately pressed to tank and cold-settled. Clear juice was racked off and then inoculated with selected yeast strains. Fermentation was in stainless steel with cooling control for a fruit driven style. The first parcel was fermented to near dryness and with the second parcel, fermentation was stopped early to leave some residual sugar. The wine spent four months on yeast lees before blending. The depth of flavour make it a very versatile wine to enjoy with just about any food. It’s ideal with roasted white meats such as pork or chicken as well as stir-fried food as the moderate acidity offsets any oiliness. The slight residual sugar means that it will go well with food that has a touch of sweetness, such as sweet and sour pork. It would also work well with goats cheese. An ideal match would be pork and vegetable spring rolls with sweet plum dipping sauce.

Our Martinborough Vineyard Chardonnay is often described as a Chardonnay lover’s Chardonnay. This vintage has produced a Pinot Noir displaying opulent rich aromatics; lush dark fruits of the forest dominate the aroma and these are underpinned by sweet brown spice notes. The wine displays lovely elegance and flow with striking precision and clarity. On the palate it kicks off with a plush dense fruit of the forest entry, this plushness then moves beautifully into the mid palate, after which fine elegant textural tannins frame fruit and acidity on a lengthy finish. CELLARING POTENTIAL Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Noir will improve for 7-10 years given optimal vintage and cellaring conditions. VINTAGE 2013 The growing season in 2013 kicked off with a cool spring. Frosts in early November reduced production from Station Block, at the top of the Cromwell basin, but Bannockburn was untouched. Although the cool spring continued after that, temperatures warmed just before Christmas in time to make for a very successful flowering. January was cooler and wetter than average and then February onwards was very warm and dry. We experienced a protracted veraison (the point at which the grapes stop growing and start to ripen, characterised by colour change) leading to increased variability in ripeness. To counter this we introduced a late colour thin to ensure fruit arrived in optimal condition at harvest. Early autumn returned to more classic settled Central autumnal conditions, and harvest started on the 3rd of April, continuing through until the 3rd of May. It was a normal yielding year, with nice focused acidity and interesting flavour profiles reflecting, to some degree, the variability of the season.

Following a dramatic packaging makeover of its ‘standard’ blend, Whyte & Mackay has introduced a new aged blended expression, namely The Thirteen. This replaces the existing 12-year-old blend, and according to its creator, Master Blender Richard Paterson, “Thirteen may be seen as an unlucky number, but it’s very lucky for our consumers. The extra year that the malt whiskies in this blend have spent maturing in Sherry casks before being married with the grains gives it an extra mellowness and smoothness.” On the nose The Thirteen is more muscular than the ‘standard’ blend, with stewed fruit and Sherry notes. On the palate it is bigger bodied, richer and more Sherried in character. It is pleasingly complex, with spices and nuts and a medium length fruitcake finish.

Now assuming cult status in the New Zealand wine scene the Doctors’ Riesling continues to amaze wine critics and novices alike. Grown on our stony Condors bend vineyard at Renwick the fruit ripens slowly, in Marlborough’s cool dry autumn climate, gaining flavour intensity yet retaining all important acidity. Harvested early at low sugars the grapes are gently pressed, cold settled and given a cool slow fermentation which was arrested around 8.5% alcohol and 42g/l residual sugar. The final decision on when to stop the wine fermentation is very much decided on acid/sugar balance. Tasting Notes Our latest Doctors’ Riesling shows those signature lime sherbet, granny smith apple, mandarin flavours and refreshing taste that have made it such an appealing wine.
